Anchor Scriptures: 1 Peter 3:13–15; Revelation 21:1–5

Introduction

Hope is one of the most powerful words in the Christian faith, yet it is often one of the most misunderstood. In everyday conversations, hope is frequently expressed as uncertainty:

"I hope things work out."

"I hope I get the job."

"I hope tomorrow is better."

But biblical hope is not uncertainty. It is not crossing our fingers and wishing for the best. Biblical hope is a confident expectation rooted in the character of God and the certainty of His promises. It is the unwavering assurance that God is faithful, even when our circumstances are difficult.

As believers, we live in a world filled with challenges, disappointments, suffering, and uncertainty. Yet we are called to stand out because of the hope that lives within us. Peter challenges believers to always be ready to explain the reason for their hope. That means our lives should display a confidence that points people toward Christ.

The question is not whether we have challenges. The question is whether we have hope in the midst of them.

What Is Hope?

Jesus never promised His followers a trouble-free life. In fact, He said:

"In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world." (John 16:33)

Hope is the confident expectation that God will do what He has promised. It is active trust in God's character and faithfulness.

The writer of Hebrews describes hope as:

"An anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast." (Hebrews 6:19)

An anchor does not stop storms from coming. It keeps a ship from drifting when the storm arrives.

Likewise, hope does not remove life's difficulties, but it keeps us firmly rooted in God when everything around us feels uncertain.

When circumstances change, hope remains because it is anchored not in circumstances, but in God Himself.

Why Do We Hope?

We Hope Because of Who God Is

Our hope begins with God.

The prophet Jeremiah declares that those who trust in the Lord are blessed because their confidence is in Him. God is not merely the source of hope—He is our hope.

We can trust Him because:

God Is Faithful

God cannot lie. His promises are completely trustworthy.

Every promise He has made will come to pass because His character guarantees His word.

God Is Unchanging

The Lord declares:

"For I am the Lord, I do not change." (Malachi 3:6)

People change. Circumstances change. Economies change. Cultures change.

God does not.

The same God who delivered Israel, sustained David, protected Daniel, and raised Christ from the dead is still at work today.

God Is Good

Psalm 34:8 invites us:

"Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good."

Even when we do not understand His ways, we can trust His heart.

Hope flourishes when we remember that God is faithful, unchanging, and good.

We Hope Because of God's Promises

God's promises give substance to our hope.

The Promise of Salvation

Through Jesus Christ, God has provided salvation and reconciliation with Himself.

Our hope is not based on our own goodness but on the finished work of Christ.

The Promise of Eternal Life

Paul speaks of:

"The hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began." (Titus 1:2)

For believers, death is not the end of the story. Eternal life is not merely a future possibility—it is a guaranteed promise secured through Jesus.

The Promise of a New Heaven and New Earth

One of the greatest expressions of hope is found in Revelation 21.

John sees a future where God dwells with His people, wipes away every tear, and removes death, sorrow, pain, and suffering forever.

Then God declares:

"Behold, I make all things new." (Revelation 21:5)

This is the ultimate expression of divine newness.

No matter how broken the world may seem today, God is moving history toward complete restoration.

Why Hope Matters

Hope Strengthens Us

Isaiah reminds us that those who wait upon the Lord renew their strength.

Hope enables weary believers to keep moving forward when others give up.

Hope Produces Growth

Romans 5 teaches that tribulation produces perseverance, perseverance produces character, and character produces hope.

God often develops hope not by removing trials, but by walking us through them.

Hope Leads to Holiness

When believers keep eternity in view, they begin to live differently.

The hope of seeing Christ one day motivates us to pursue purity, obedience, and spiritual maturity today.

Hope Remains

Paul identifies faith, hope, and love as the three abiding virtues of the Christian life.

Hope is not optional for the believer—it is essential.

What Hope Is Not

To understand true hope, we must understand what it is not.

Hope Is Not Wishful Thinking

Biblical hope is not merely wishing something good might happen.

It is confidence based on God's promises and character.

Hope Is Not Denial

Hope does not ignore pain, suffering, or hardship.

Christians do not pretend difficulties do not exist.

Instead, we face reality with the assurance that God remains in control.

Hope Is Not Passive

Biblical hope moves us to action.

It inspires prayer, perseverance, obedience, and faithful living while we wait for God's promises to unfold.

Hope does not sit still—it moves forward trusting God.

How Should We Respond to This Hope?

1. Set Your Hope Fully on Christ

Peter instructs believers to place their hope completely on God's grace.

Partial hope in God and partial hope in worldly systems will always lead to instability.

2. Feed Your Hope Through Scripture

God's Word continually strengthens our confidence in Him.

The more we immerse ourselves in Scripture, the stronger our hope becomes.

3. Rejoice Even During Difficult Seasons

Christian joy is not dependent upon circumstances.

It is rooted in confidence that God is working all things according to His purpose.

4. Share Your Hope With Others

The world is desperately searching for hope.

Believers are called to share the reason for their confidence with gentleness, humility, and conviction.

Sometimes the most powerful testimony is simply living with peace when everyone else is overwhelmed.

What Now?

  1. If someone asked you today why you hope in God, what would you say?

  2. What circumstances are currently testing your hope?

  3. Are you placing your confidence in God or in changing circumstances?

  4. How has God demonstrated His faithfulness in your life?

  5. Who around you needs to hear about the hope you have in Christ?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for being the source of our hope. Thank You that our confidence is not based on circumstances, emotions, or human strength, but on Your unchanging character and unfailing promises. Help us to remain anchored in You during every season of life. Strengthen our faith, renew our minds through Your Word, and fill us with joy and peace as we trust in You. May our lives reflect the hope we have in Christ, and may we boldly share that hope with others. We look forward to the day when You will make all things new. In Jesus' name, Amen.
