The New Birth – A New Identity

1 John 5:11–12 | Ephesians 2:8–9 | 2 Corinthians 5:17

A Thought to Begin

Everyone wants a fresh start.A clean slate.A new beginning.

But true newness is not found in changing circumstances—it is found in being changed from within.

Salvation is not just about being forgiven. It is about being made new.

What Is Salvation?

“He who has the Son has life…” — 1 John 5:11-12

Salvation is the gift of life given by God through Jesus Christ.

“By grace you have been saved through faith…” — Ephesians 2:8-9

It is not earned. It is not deserved. It is received.

Salvation is God’s invitation into a new life, new relationship, and new identity.

How Do We Receive This Gift?

“If you confess with your mouth… and believe in your heart… you will be saved.” — Romans 10:8-10

Salvation is both:

  • Internal (belief in the heart)

  • External (confession with the mouth)

It is a decision to:

  • Trust in Jesus

  • Surrender your life

  • Receive what God has already done

What Happens When We Are Saved?

Salvation is not just forgiveness—it is an exchange.

“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you…” — Ezekiel 36:26-27

God takes:

  • A hardened heart

And gives:

  • A responsive heart

  • A new spirit

  • His presence within you

The Old Self vs The New Self

The Old Self

Before salvation, Scripture describes us as:

  • Spiritually dead

  • Driven by the flesh

  • Separated from God

Ephesians 2:1-5

The old life is marked by:

  • Sin

  • Self-centeredness

  • Brokenness

The New Self

“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation…” — 2 Corinthians 5:17

Salvation gives you:

  • A new identity

  • A fresh start

  • A clean slate

The Evidence of New Life

The old life produces:

  • Works of the flesh (Galatians 5:19–21)

The new life produces:

  • Fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22–24)

This means:

You don’t just live differently—you become different.

Transformation: A Daily Journey

Salvation is a moment.Transformation is a process.

“Work out your own salvation…” — Philippians 2:12-13

This doesn’t mean earn it—It means live it out.

Transformation requires:

  • Daily surrender

  • Daily growth

  • Daily dying to self

“I die daily.” — 1 Corinthians 15:31

How Do We Continue to Be Transformed?

Spiritual growth doesn’t happen passively.

It requires intention:

Engage the Word

Joshua 1:8Meditate on Scripture consistently.

Build a Life of Prayer

1 Thessalonians 5:17Stay connected to God.

Practice Spiritual Disciplines

  • Prayer

  • Fasting

  • Worship

Stay Connected to Community

Proverbs 27:17

Growth happens in relationship, not isolation.

Why Salvation Matters

Salvation brings victory:

Victory over death

Romans 6:23

Victory over sin

Romans 6:14

Victory over condemnation

Romans 8:1

Victory over the enemy

Luke 10:18-19

Now What?

  • Have I truly received salvation, or am I just familiar with it?

  • Do I understand my new identity in Christ?

  • Am I still living like my old self, or walking in my new nature?

  • What area of my life needs to reflect this new identity more clearly?

  • Am I actively pursuing transformation, or remaining stagnant?

  • What step can I take this week to grow in my relationship with God?

Final Reflection

Salvation is not the end of the journey. It is the beginning.

It is:

  • A new life

  • A new identity

  • A new direction

Closing Thought

You are not who you used to be—but you must choose to live like who you’ve become.

Prayer

Father, thank You for the gift of salvation.Help me to fully understand who I am in You.Give me the strength to walk in my new identityand to grow daily into the person You’ve called me to be. Amen.
