A Thought to Begin
Spiritual growth does not happen by accident. It happens through intention.
Many desire to grow closer to God—but few build the habits that make that growth possible.
Growth in Christ is not just about desire—it is about discipline.
What Are Spiritual Disciplines?
Spiritual disciplines are not about performance. They are about transformation.
The word “disciple” and “discipline” share the same root—to learn.
A disciple is a learner.Discipline is the training that makes learning possible.
Spiritual disciplines are practices we engage in, in partnership with God, to grow, mature, and become more like Christ.
They are like training exercises for the spiritual life.
Why Spiritual Disciplines Matter
Spiritual disciplines are not optional—they are essential.
They:
1. Reflect our understanding of salvation
We “work out” what God has already worked in (Philippians 2:12)
2. Become our strategy for waiting on God
The early believers didn’t just wait—they prayed, gathered, and sought God together.
3. Are our response to God’s love
Love is expressed through obedience (2 John 1:6)
4. Keep us on the path of transformation
We are renewed by changing how we think (Romans 12:2)
5. Shift our appetite from flesh to Spirit
What you feed will grow (Galatians 6:8)
The Reality of Spiritual Discipline
It’s important to understand what spiritual disciplines are—and what they are not.
They are not a substitute for salvation
We are saved by grace, not by works (Ephesians 2:8–9)
They require sacrifice
Following Jesus involves denying self daily (Luke 9:23)
They are personal, but not meant to be done alone
Community strengthens discipline (Hebrews 10:24–25)
Consistency is key
Faithfulness over time produces results (1 Corinthians 15:58)
The Model of the Early Church
The early church didn’t grow by accident.
“They continued steadfastly…” (Acts 2:42)
They were disciplined in four key areas:
The Word – learning and applying Scripture
Prayer – consistent communication with God
Fellowship – deep, accountable relationships
Giving – supporting the work of God
Spiritual maturity is built through consistent, intentional habits—not occasional effort.
Two Types of Spiritual Disciplines
To grow fully, we need both:
Disciplines of Engagement (ADD)
These draw us closer to God:
Prayer
Scripture
Fellowship
Service
Giving
Disciplines of Abstinence (SUBTRACT)
These remove distractions:
Fasting
Silence
Solitude
Self-denial
Growth happens when we both add what feeds the Spirit and remove what feeds the flesh.
A Practical Approach to Spiritual Growth
Spiritual discipline is not about doing everything at once.
It’s about building sustainably.
Phase 1: Start
Keep it simple.Start small. Be intentional.
5 minutes of prayer is better than none.
Phase 2: Build
Focus on consistency over intensity.
10 minutes daily is better than 1 hour occasionally.
Phase 3: Maintain
Stay accountable
Track growth
Depend on the Holy Spirit
The goal is not perfection—it is presence.
Expect Resistance
Growth will not come easily.
“The flesh and the Spirit are in conflict…” (Galatians 5:17)
You will face:
Distractions
Fatigue
Resistance
But that tension is part of the process.
Now What?
Take a moment and ask yourself:
Which spiritual discipline is currently strongest in my life?
Which one have I been neglecting?
What is one discipline I need to start or rebuild?
What has been my biggest obstacle—time, consistency, or motivation?
What practical step can I take this week to grow spiritually?
Who can help hold me accountable in this journey?
Final Reflection
Spiritual disciplines don’t make you saved. They make you formed.
They shape:
Your thinking
Your desires
Your habits
Your relationship with God
Closing Thought
You don’t drift into spiritual maturity—you discipline your way into it.
Prayer
Father, help me to be intentional in my walk with You.Give me the discipline to seek You daily, the strength to remain consistent, and the grace to grow into the person You’ve called me to be.Amen.
