THE WAYS OF GOD: HUMILITY

Walking in the Way of God: The Power of Humility

When you hear the word humility, what comes to mind? For many, it might evoke a sense of meekness or modesty. But true humility, as taught by God, is far more profound—it’s a strength that transforms lives.

What is Humility?

At its core, humility is freedom from pride or arrogance. It’s not about devaluing yourself but rather recognizing your place in God’s purpose and serving others selflessly. The ultimate example of humility is found in Jesus Christ.

The Life of Jesus: A Masterclass in Humility

His Birth: A Humble Beginning

When we imagine the birth of a king, we think of palaces, wealth, and grandeur. But Jesus, the King of Kings, was born in a manger, wrapped in swaddling clothes (Luke 2:1–7). This humble beginning reminds us that greatness isn’t about status or wealth but about serving God’s purpose.

His Actions: Washing the Disciples’ Feet

In John 13:1–17, we see Jesus, the Lord of all, kneeling to wash His disciples' feet—a task reserved for the lowliest of servants. Through this act, He taught us that true leadership begins with serving others.

His Teachings: Exalting the Humble

Jesus consistently taught the value of humility. In Matthew 23:12, He says, “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” He redefined greatness as serving others, not seeking to be served (Matthew 20:27–28).

His Sacrifice: The Ultimate Act of Humility

Jesus’ humility culminated in His death on the cross. Despite being mocked, beaten, and crucified, He obediently endured it all to fulfill God’s will (Matthew 27:27–31). His sacrifice was a powerful demonstration of love and selflessness.

Lessons from Jesus’ Life

Jesus’ humility teaches us to:

  • Think less of ourselves and more of others. True humility prioritizes service over self. (Strength of Character).

  • Rely on God. Humility acknowledges our limitations and seeks God’s guidance. (Listening and Trusting).

  • Embrace obedience and sacrifice. Living humbly often requires laying down our pride and desires for the sake of others. (Service and Obedience)

Other Biblical Examples of Humility and Lessons

  • King David repented of his sins and acknowledged God’s authority (Psalm 51:10–12), (Repentance).

  • Joseph forgave his brothers despite their betrayal, showing compassion (Genesis 50:19–21), (Forgiveness)

  • Daniel credited God for the wisdom to interpret Nebuchadnezzar’s dream, emphasizing dependence on God (Daniel 2:27–30), (Reverence).

How Can We Practice Humility?

Here are some ways to embody humility in daily life:

  • In Relationships: Listen actively, admit when you're wrong, and seek to uplift others.

  • At Work or School: Recognize the contributions of others, avoid boasting, and remain teachable.

  • Spiritually: Pray for humility and remember that all success comes from God.

Now What?

Do you struggle with pride? Are there areas in your life where you need to practice more humility? Reflect on 2 Chronicles 7:14, which says, “If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”

Let’s strive to live humbly, following the example of Christ. Through humility, we align ourselves with God’s will, strengthen our relationships, and become a blessing to those around us.

Now what will you do to walk in humility today?
