IN CONTROL

Who’s in Control? A Devotional on Surrender and Spiritual Vigilance.

Opening Scripture:“I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” - Galatians 2:20

Reflection

The Christian journey is one of surrender, allowing Christ to be the controlling force in our lives. Just as a pilot needs full control of an aircraft, we must surrender our “control room” to Jesus, trusting Him with every part of our lives. When we let go, God takes the lead, guiding us in ways that bear fruit and bring us closer to His love.

The Battle Within

In Genesis, God cautioned Cain, “Sin lies at the door... but you should rule over it” (Genesis 4:7). Paul echoes this struggle in Romans 7, admitting he battles against sin within. Despite his desire to do good, Paul realizes that the strength to overcome sin comes not from himself but from the grace of Christ. We, too, are in a daily battle, needing to choose who or what we allow into the “control room” of our lives.

Where We Find Strength

Paul reminds us in Romans 6: "Do not let sin reign in your mortal body... For sin shall not have dominion over you." This means we have the power, through Christ, to resist the temptations and distractions that try to take control. We are invited to present ourselves to God, choosing righteousness over sin, life over death, grace over law.

Watchfulness

What we allow into our minds and hearts greatly impacts our spiritual lives. Just as seeds grow into fruit-bearing trees, so too do the thoughts, media, and relationships we invest in. Proverbs tells us, “Guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it” (Proverbs 4:23). Are we intentional about the seeds we’re planting? What we watch, listen to, and even whom we surround ourselves with can either draw us closer to Christ or pull us away.

Unequal Yoking

2 Corinthians 6:14-16 warns us against being “unequally yoked.” We are temples of God, called to walk in His light. Just as two people walking together need to be in agreement, our relationships and influences must align with our faith. Let us walk with those who encourage us in our faith, strengthening us on our journey with Christ.

Invitation

Finally, Jesus Himself stands at the door and knocks (Revelation 3:20). When we open our hearts to Him, He enters in, bringing us into a life of blessing, fruitfulness, and purpose (Psalm 1:1-3). His invitation is constant, asking us to surrender, to let Him take control. In doing so, we allow His love and wisdom to guide us in every decision, every relationship, and every thought.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, we surrender our hearts and minds to You. Help us to recognize and avoid influences that draw us away from Your light. Guide us in choosing what is holy and life-giving. May our lives be reflections of Your love and may our choices honor You in every way. Amen.
