Decisive Dealings: The Pathway

Every Decision is Taking You Somewhere

"Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction... Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it." — Matthew 7:13–14 (NKJV)

Every day we make countless decisions. Some are small and seemingly insignificant. Others alter the course of our lives forever. Yet what if every choice—no matter how ordinary—was quietly shaping the path we walk?

Jesus teaches that life is not a random collection of moments. It is a journey. Every person is already on a pathway, and every pathway has a destination. The question is not whether you're on a path, but where your path is leading.

Two Gates. Two Destinations.

At the conclusion of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus presents one final challenge. After revealing what life in God's Kingdom looks like, He places before His listeners a decision.

There are only two gates.

There are only two roads.

There are only two destinations.

The broad gate is attractive because it requires almost nothing. It welcomes every opinion, every desire, and every version of truth. It demands no repentance, no surrender, and no self-examination. It is comfortable because it allows us to define good and evil on our own terms.

But comfort is not always confirmation.

Scripture warns us:

"There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death." (Proverbs 14:12)

The narrow gate is different. Jesus describes it as small, and the road beyond it as difficult. The Christian life was never promised to be effortless. It requires humility, obedience, endurance, and faith. There will be pressure. There will be opposition. There will be moments when following Christ costs you popularity, comfort, convenience, or even relationships.

Yet this difficult road has a glorious destination.

It leads to life.

The Choice Began in Eden

The decision between life and death did not begin in Matthew 7. It began in the Garden of Eden.

God gave Adam and Eve everything they needed. They lived in perfect fellowship with Him. But one tree represented a choice: would humanity trust God's wisdom or choose its own?

When they believed the serpent instead of God, they stepped off the pathway of life and onto the pathway of death. Sin was not merely breaking a rule—it was replacing God's definition of good and evil with humanity's own.

That same decision confronts every generation.

Will I trust God's wisdom?

Or will I trust my own?

Throughout Scripture, God continually places this decision before His people.

"I have set before you life and death... therefore choose life." (Deuteronomy 30)

The Bible is remarkably consistent. The path has never changed.

The Gate Has a Name

Perhaps the most encouraging truth is that Jesus doesn't merely point toward the narrow gate.

He is the gate.

"I am the door..." (John 10:9)

"I am the way, the truth, and the life." (John 14:6)

Christianity is not simply following a moral code. It is following a Person.

Entering the narrow gate begins with repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. Remaining on the narrow road means walking daily in relationship with Him.

The pathway is not maintained by human determination alone—it is sustained by abiding in Christ.

Staying on the Right Path

Every road requires direction, and the pathway of life is no different.

God has not left us to navigate alone.

He gives us His Word to illuminate our steps.

He invites us into prayer so we can seek His direction.

He gives us the Holy Spirit to teach, convict, strengthen, and guide us.

He provides wisdom when we ask.

He surrounds us with godly counsel to help us remain faithful.

These are not religious activities meant to earn God's favor. They are gifts that keep our hearts aligned with His.

Expect Roadblocks

Walking with Christ does not remove difficulty.

In fact, Jesus promised the opposite.

Along the narrow path we will encounter distractions that steal our focus, temptations that pull us away from obedience, voices that encourage compromise, relationships that influence us negatively, seasons of weariness, and false teaching that distorts truth.

These obstacles should not surprise us.

They remind us that we are walking against the current of a fallen world.

The narrow road requires endurance because it leads somewhere worth arriving.

How Do You Know You're Still on the Right Path?

Not by how dramatic your experiences are.

Not by how busy your schedule is.

Not even by how religious you appear.

Jesus said we would recognize the true path by its fruit.

As we walk with Him, His character becomes increasingly visible in us.

Love replaces bitterness.

Joy remains through hardship.

Peace overcomes anxiety.

Patience grows where anger once ruled.

Kindness becomes natural.

Faithfulness becomes consistent.

Self-control begins to govern our desires.

The evidence of the pathway is not perfection—it is transformation.

A Personal Path Audit

Perhaps today is an opportunity to pause and ask yourself a few honest questions.

• Where has my direction slowly drifted?

• Have I been choosing convenience over obedience?

• Am I intentionally remaining on God's pathway?

• Which roadblock keeps appearing in my life?

• What fruit has the Holy Spirit been producing in me recently?

Small decisions become lifelong directions.

What Now?

The greatest deception isn't necessarily choosing evil.

Sometimes it's simply choosing our own wisdom instead of God's.

From Genesis to Revelation, God lovingly places before humanity the same invitation:

Choose life.

Jesus has opened the narrow gate.

The Holy Spirit walks beside us.

God's Word lights the path before us.

The destination is certain for those who continue following Him.

The question is no longer whether there is a path.

The question is this:

Which path are you walking today?

Prayer

Father, thank You for revealing the pathway that leads to life through Jesus Christ. Forgive me for the times I have trusted my own understanding instead of Your wisdom. Teach me to walk faithfully on the narrow path, even when it is difficult. Let Your Word guide my steps, Your Spirit strengthen my heart, and Your truth shape every decision I make. May my life bear fruit that reflects Your Kingdom, and may I never lose sight of the destination You have prepared for those who love You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
